Wood Flooring FAQ’s

Dealing with doorways

Many people worry about how to deal with different thicknesses of flooring between rooms or how to discreetly cover the expansion gap required around wood flooring at doorways. With our versatile range of thresholds there is no need – it is simple to create a seamless transition between rooms.

Dealing with doorways

When you install wood flooring, an expansion gap needs to be left around the whole perimeter, including at doorways, to accommodate the natural movement in the timber. This is the case for both solid and engineered wood floors. To cover the expansion gap you will need to fit a threshold, even if there is no difference in floor levels between adjacent rooms.

LEVEL THRESHOLDS

Where floor levels are the same, a simple Level Threshold or T Bar is the most common choice of threshold. Alternatively, a skilled fitter can create a level threshold using a piece of flooring trimmed to the desired width and set either side with a piece of flooring cork to accommodate the expansion gap.

REDUCING THRESHOLDS

Where there is a difference in floor levels between rooms, a well chosen reducing threshold can accommodate this easily so that it is barely noticeable as you walk across it.

Our Wood to Carpet / Tile Threshold is designed to accommodate a difference of approximately 10mm in floor coverings, which is typically that between 20mm thick wood flooring and a good quality carpet and underlay, porcelain or stone tile. It is gently rounded so that both the eye and the foot travel across it smoothly.

If the difference in height between adjacent floor coverings is greater than 10mm, you can either use our Full Reducing Threshold, which is designed to accommodate approximately 15mm, or take advantage of our joinery service and have a Bespoke Threshold made to measure.

BESPOKE THRESHOLDS

Our Bespoke Thresholds can accommodate differences between floor coverings of up to 50mm and are gently chamfered so that there are easy to cross and do not create an awkward step or trip hazard. Often these are ordered once the floor is laid so that the fitter can measure the exact size required and ensure a perfect fit, although this is not always the case.

THRESHOLDS FINISHED TO COMPLEMENT YOUR FLOOR

All of our thresholds are made from solid European Oak. They are supplied unfinished as standard, but we can finish them to order in any of our floor finishes so they will feel like part of the floor once fitted against it and not create an eye catching division.
