Floor Finishes

Only unfnished or semi finished Broadleaf wood flooring will need finishing in situ. In this case, your chosen wood floor finish should be applied in line with manufacturers’ instructions and you should bear the following points in mind:

  • Always make sure that the floor is clean, dry and free of dust before applying any floor finishes.
  • Prior to finishing a wood floor, remove dust with a vacuum cleaner rather than a brush to minimise dust in the air.
  • Always allow floor finishes to cure fully before moving furniture back in and using the floor as normal.
  • Do not skimp on recommended drying times between coats or coverage. This can significantly reduce the performance of the finish.
  • Make sure the room is warm (min 10º C) and well ventilated while finishing a wood floor. Remember to keep this up while the finish dries.

Ideally we would recommend that any other works – such as decorating – are completed before your wood flooring is finished (or fitted in the case of prefinished wood floors) to minimise any risk of damage.

If this is not possible, your wood flooring should be covered with a suitable protective material. These are normally supplied in sheets / rolls to be taped together. In this case, make sure that the tape is only stuck to the protective covering itself and not to the floor, as it will be solvent based and will damage the floor finish.

Similarly, if skirtings are decorated after your floor is fitted, masking tape must not be used, and any protective covering must not be taped to the floor. All adhesive tapes, even those marked as low tack, contain solvents which will damage your floor finish.
