Use matching thresholds and steps to finish your wood floor perfectly.

Leonardo Da Vinci knew that details make perfection and so do we, which is why we make steps, trims and beading to complement every one of our beautiful wood floors. Whether it’s a single threshold between two rooms, a simple step from one level to another, or treads and risers for a whole staircase, we can help you create a seamless look throughout.

Broadleaf Flooring Trims and Thresholds

Steps and Stairs

Our solid oak stair nosings are precision machined and can be used to create an elegant and professional finish for our flooring at the top of steps or stairs. They can also be used in combination with our planks or parquet to clad the treads on existing steps. To create the look of a complete oak staircase at a fraction of the price of the real thing, you can completely clad existing timber or concrete steps with our made to measure solid oak treads and risers. Whichever option you choose can be finished in any of our floor finishes, so you can either choose them to match your floor, or in a contrasting colour to create an eye catching design detail. If you need any advice on which might be suitable, and how to order, please just get in touch.

Plank and parquet floors are both beautiful, but if you like both and don’t know which to choose, the following might help you.

Plank floors are quicker and easier to install than parquet, which means that they will be less expensive to install. They are also a simpler DIY option. That said, parquet floors have an undeniable wow factor, and create a feature all on their own. This is one of the reasons that they are such a popular choice for hallways, which can often be difficult to furnish due to their size and the need to be able to move through them freely.

Herringbone parquet is also a great solution for unusually shaped rooms such as L shapes or those entered from more than one direction, as the pattern works both ways, whereas plank floors tend to look better in one direction or another.

Trims and Thresholds

When skirting is already in place, beading is the simplest way to cover the gap that needs to be left around the perimeter to allow for expansion across the seasons. Another option is to undercut the skirting (cut along the base to create enough space for the flooring to slide underneath), but this is more complicated and requires a skilled fitter and the right tools.  It’s worth noting that this will make the skirting shorter by the thickness of the flooring, which may not be desirable depending on its size.

Beading can be painted in the same colour as the skirting, but this draws the wall colour onto the floor making the floor area appear smaller. Our preferred solution is to finish the beading in the same colour as the floor, as this visually expands the floor area and makes the room feel bigger. We have a choice of solid oak beading profiles, although our flat bead is the most popular, all of which can be finished in the same way as our floors.

Thresholds will need to be used at doorways between rooms to maintain the expansion gap.  If there’s no difference in floor heights they will need to be level and if one floor is higher than the other they’ll need to be reducing. Our standard thresholds deal with the most common variations, but if these don’t meet your needs don’t worry, our bespoke oak thresholds can accommodate any variation in floor heights to ensure a seamless transition. All of our oak thresholds can be finished in the same way as our floors so that they bend in easily and look like part of them.
